Theory
A sanctuary for a cinematic experience is a product of a unique environment and an innovative approach to design.

Real-Time Images

Overall Structure - This side profile of the school explores its context, sitting parallel to ANZAC parade where tension wires span over across the road towards NIDA. The shape of the building has influences from the Burj Al Arab in Dubai and the innovative works of Calatrava with the incorporation of dominant concrete structures and light tension chords.

Ground floor - Elevated above the ground, the school invites its visitors through an open grand staircase. At a low angle, the public can acknowledge the grand curved skeleton-like structure with its tension chords connecting it to the ground.

Second Floor - The interior garden and open spaces within the school provide areas for multifunctional use create a sanctuary for learning. In addition to the structural benefits of narrow beams and tension chords, they serve the purpose of manipulating light and creating cinematic shadows throughout the school which are highlighted especially in these open areas. The building leads directly to the Square House which can be seen at the end of this level.

Second Floor - The staircase extends out on the building's overall structure and reflects the themes and tones of the building with its wooden steps and concrete curved barrier at each platform. The continuation of tension chords and thin timber structures in this element is key to the cohesion of the building and its ability to create cinematic shadows.

Third Floor - The use of glass within the school to create openness can be exhibited in a studio room that overlooks the interior garden, gallery, which connects the school to the Tyree building, and library. The use of glass, complemented by the timber beams adds, lightness to a predominantly concrete structure creating a unique environment.

From the third floor library of the whole structure, the public is able to appreciate the building in its entirety as all floors and its structural composition of the school are visible.

Fly Through

Moving Elements
The purpose of the moving elements in the school is to allow for multifunctional spaces especially in areas that are not in continuous use such as the gallery space or lecture hall.

The wall of the lecture hall moves vertically and this allows the space to be open and used for other purposes such as studying or socialising when no lectures are in progress.

Glass boxes to display student work emerge from a table in the gallery space allowing the gallery to serve as a study space when there are no ongoing exhibitions.
